Betty J. Goodwin

Betty J. Goodwin, a longtime resident of Mattydale, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the age of 99. Born in Baldwinsville, she was the daughter of the late Myrtle and Roy Slater Sr. A 1944 graduate of Marcellus High School, Betty pursued a career in nursing, training as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Syracuse General. She worked in the maternity ward at St. Mary's Hospital, and later at Jolenta Hall and the Infirmary at the Mother House.

Betty was a devoted member of St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale and it's Holy Rosary Society. She was a member of the Columbiettes, the American Legion #1832 Auxiliary, and the Mattydale-Hinsdale Seniors Group. Betty enjoyed bowling and was involved in a league at Strike 'N Spare Lanes. Her life was enriched by her faith, love for shopping, and enjoying time at her family camp in Inlet, NY.

Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband of 44 years, Donald R. Goodwin, five siblings: Naomi Slater Bevier, Emmeline Slater Peters, Irene Slater Pawlina, Roy Slater Jr., and Rose Slater Smith, and by a son-in-law, Richard Wojcik.

She is survived by her son, Chuck L. (Eva) Goodwin of Mattydale; her daughter, Donna Goodwin of East Syracuse; and two siblings, Virginia Slater Cuyle of Manlius and Linda Slater O'Brien of Cato. She was grandmother to Larry, Angela, Andrea, Mark, Chuckie, Donnie, Eric, Colin, Liam, Greg and Sarah; great grandmother to Shayna, Kayla, Jacob, Alexis, Savanna, Logan, Connor, Donovan, Alaiya, Andru, Anthony, Eden Rose, and Elijah; and great great grandmother to Lillianna, Delilah, Leonidas, Andru Jr., Darren and Gabriel.

Contributions in Betty's memory may be made to the American Legion #1832 Auxiliary or to an animal rescue of your choice.

Friends may call on Monday, April 6, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale. Funeral Service will begin on Tuesday, 11:30 am, at the funeral home with burial following in Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse.
