Richard Charland

July 5, 1941 — January 26, 2016

Richard G. Charland, 74, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and all around good guy, finally went to be with his best friend of all, his maker, on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Richard was born in Churubusco, a small farm town in Northern NY to the late Cora (Trombly) and Joseph "Arcade" Charland. While in his youth, Richard worked on the family farm and attended Ellenburg High School. He also played in the family band with his brother, Norman, a fantastic guitar picker and Richard's best friend, and their father, Arcade, a fiddler who was well known throughout the lower Canadian Providences.

Richard married the former Joanne Gravell in 1963, who survives him. They moved to Syracuse and Richard was employed at Grief Bros Cooper Shop until retiring in 1995 for health reasons. He was a member in good standing in the USWA (United Steel Workers of America) and attended St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale. Richard made an annual visit each year to the St. Andrew Oratory in Montreal and the St. Anne Shrine in Vermont.

Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brothers: Norman, Roy, and Lionel; his five sisters: Cecelia Secore, Annette Ives, Eileen Marcellis, Marcella Charland, and Janann Bouissey; and by a son-in-law, John Metcalf.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by four sons: Richard (Kathy) of Cicero, Jeremiah and Travis (Karen) Charland, all of Syracuse and Michael O'Connell of Baldwinsville; three daughters: Amanda Martin of Westvale, Dawn DiPaola of Syracuse and Kelly (Ricky) Harvey of Baldwinsville; his two sisters: Joan Boscardin and Rose Miller, both of Dove Plains, NY; and a son-in-law, Jake Martin. The light of Richard's life were his grandchildren: Samantha, Nicole, Derek, Noah, Andrew, Serina, Jeremiah Jr., Bailee, Travis Jr., Corinne, Lydia, Cristopher, Dean, Eric, Julia, Sabrina, Kimberly and Ricky.

Contributions in Richard's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.

Friends may call on Saturday from 11 am - 1 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale, with a Funeral Service following at 1 pm.
