Joan M. Whiting, 92, passed away on Wednesday, April 30th, surrounded by her loved ones in Watertown. Born on August 9, 1932, in the Valley area of Syracuse, Joan was the daughter of the late Joseph Warren and Mildred (Morgan) Berry. From the very beginning, Joan's life was characterized by her unwavering dedication to education and the arts. After graduating from Valley High School in 1950, she received an associate degree in Lab Technical from Ryder College in NJ.
Joan had great appreciation for music which led her to become the music director at Hancock Air Force Base and St. Margaret's Church. Throughout the years, Joan also shared her talent by teaching piano and organ lessons. In addition to her musical pursuits, Joan had a rewarding career nurturing young minds as a pre-school teacher at the Jewish Community Center and Kiddie Garden Nursery School. Joan's warmth and patience created an environment where every child felt cherished and supported.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Joan immersed herself in various creative hobbies that brought her great joy. An avid seamstress, she dedicated countless hours to crafting beautiful clothing for her family and friends including a few wedding dresses. Knitting was also a hobby, creating intricate pieces that showcased her talent and love for those around her. She dabbled with stamps, painting, and a general love for all things crafty.
Joan was predeceased by her devoted husband of 68 years, Deacon Donald Whiting in 2023. Their unwavering love was an inspiration to all who knew them.
Joan leaves behind their three children: Mark (Pamela) Whiting of Watertown, Scott B. Whiting of Brewerton, and Melissa (David) Anderson of Ocean Isle Beach, NC. She will forever be remembered by her ten grandchildren: Kimberly Oles, Kristi Brubaker, Kelly Whiting, Ali Kascsak, Missy Whiting, Angela Guerra, Sierra Whiting, Emily Pitts, Carl Anderson, and Mark Anderson; as well as six great-grandchildren: Neva Oles, Corbin Oles, Rowan Wright, Lillian Pitts, Charlotte Pitts, and Riley Anderson.
Remembered for her unwavering commitment to family and community, Joan touched the lives of many with her genuine care and selflessness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Joan’s memory be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 7th North St., Liverpool, NY 13090, where she volunteered for nearly 25 years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 6th at 10:00 am in St. Margaret’s Church, 200 Roxboro Rd., Mattydale with burial in North Syracuse Cemetery following.
