Joseph “Jay” R. Schirtz, 70, former resident of Mattydale for most of his life, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2026, in North Carolina. Jay was a 1973 graduate of Bishop Grimes High School and relocated to North Carolina in 1999.
Jay enjoyed working with race cars and restoration. Jay was a longtime crew member on #99 Phelps Dirt Modified Team before moving to North Carolina. He worked in the assembly shops for the Richard Petty Driving Experience as well as Billy Ballew Racing and had a knack for mechanics that was utilized during his employment with Gary S. Volpicelli Restorations. He also worked for Hiller Companies taking care of fire protection, truck driving, and machine work. In addition to his love for cars, Jay was also a motorcycle enthusiast that enjoyed taking his Harley Davidson out for a spin.
In addition to his parents, Jay was predeceased by an infant daughter, Nicole Marie Schirtz; two siblings and their spouses: Nancy and Larry Davis and Thomas and Thora Schirtz; and a nephew, Gary.
He is survived by his brother, Charie (Paula) Schirtz of Mattydale, several nieces and nephews including Jayme, Jane Anne, Kyle, Tom Jr., Terri, and Robert; and several great nieces and nephews and a great-great nephew.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, July 18, at 10:00 am in North Syracuse Cemetery
