It is with great sadness that the family of Josephine N. Kelly announces her passing on October 25, 2024. Josephine lived a remarkable 102 years. Born in Solvay, NY, her parents emigrated from Sicily through Ellis Island and the family is part of the proud and hard-working Italian American legacy.
An avid reader and life-long learner, Josephine would often recite from memory Shakespearian soliloquies, poetry of British masterpieces, and text of her favorite classic American authors. Her impromptu recitations would sometimes amuse but always amaze. Josephine enjoyed skiing and playing softball where she had the nickname “Bullets.”
She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, John N. “Jack” Kelly. Surviving are her children: Cathyanne (Dennis) Piekarski, John S. (Linda) Kelly, and Patrick N. (Patricia) Kelly; seven grandchildren: Neil Kelly, Brent Kelly, Alaina (Rob) Matson, Cara Kelly, Ashley (Doug) McKeever, Lauren (Anthony) Mirabella, and DJ (Tiffany) Piekarski; and eight great grandchildren: Louisa Matson, Brooks Matson, Isabella McKeever, Gabriella McKeever, Carina Mirabella, Madison Piekarski, Marek Piekarski, and Mason Piekarski.
Contributions in Josephine’s memory may be made to the Salina Free Library, 100 Belmont St., Mattydale, NY 13211.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Josephine’s caregivers of the last few years, Trudy, Shirley, Kayla, and Patty. They attended to our mom with respect and love for which we are eternally grateful.
