Lee A. Knapp, Sr., 68, a lifelong resident of Mattydale, passed away on November 3, 2026. Born in Syracuse to the late Lawrence and Dorothy Knapp, Lee was a 1976 graduate of North Syracuse High School, where he lettered in varsity lacrosse and football. He was also a proud Eagle Scout, having earned the rank with Boy Scouts of America Troop 75 in Mattydale. Following high school, Lee pursued his creative passions, earning a degree at Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida.
Lee dedicated 28 years of service to the City of Syracuse Police Department, where he served as a Detective before retiring in 2013.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Lee was a devoted Syracuse University fan and held season tickets for Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse for more than 25 years. He cherished time spent at the family camp on Mud Lake in Theresa, NY, and took great pride in following his son's band, M.M.C. An avid thrift-store shopper, Lee enjoyed collecting unique and nostalgic treasures, building an eclectic collection over the years. He was also a member of the former Calvary United Methodist Church in Mattydale.
Above all else, Lee's greatest joy was his family. He especially treasured his role as Grandpa and loved being there to cheer on his grandchildren at their sporting events. The memories made with family will be cherished for generations.
Lee is survived by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 48 years, the former Karen Burns, who was his lifelong partner, confidant, and unwavering support. He will be deeply missed by his three children, Korinne (Jon) Paninski of Bridgeport, Lauren Knapp of Cicero, and Lee (Zenetta) Knapp of Mattydale; his sister, Lynne Knapp of Cicero; his brother, Larry (Melissa) Knapp of Florida; foster brother, Les Sankey of Mattydale; and his three beloved grandchildren, McKale, Marley, and Garret.
Contributions in Lee’s memory may be made to the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, PO Box 11218, Syracuse, NY 13218.
