Nicholas Rice

March 6, 1931 — October 6, 2013

Nicholas "Nick" G. Rice, 82, lifelong resident of North Syracuse, died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital. Nick was a 1949 graduate of North Syracuse High School and was the son of the late Nicholas L. and Anna C. (Mueller) Rice.

He served in the US Army in Germany during the Korean War. Nick worked at Syracuse Color Press in Solvay for 15 years and then for Dix Typesetting for 20 years before retiring in 1985 as their Vice President. Nick volunteered as an Adult Leader for the Boy Scouts of America with the Hiawatha Council for 20 years and obtained the Order of the Arrow, the Four Bead Wood Badge and the Silver Beaver Award. He received Today's Patriot Award from the Knights of Columbus Assembly #773 in North Syracuse, volunteered in Pastoral Care at Crouse Hospital and was a life member of the Nate Perry Elementary PTA. Nick was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret's Church where he served as an Usher, Eucharistic Minister, and volunteered in their Food Pantry.

Nicholas is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Constance "Connie" (Shannon); their two daughters: Kathleen (Scott) Krell of Liverpool, and Karen (Thomas) Reynolds of Oswego; his four grandchildren: Megan (Daniel Garewski) Krell and Caitlin, James, and Caroline Reynolds; a brother: Harold Rice of Camillus; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the St. Joseph's MICU Staff for their compassionate care of Nick during his stay.

Friends may call on Friday from 4-7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale, NY. Prayer service will begin at the funeral home on Saturday, 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Margaret's Church. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Oswego.
