Richard “Maynard” Fillinger, 83, of Fabius, affectionately known to many as "Dickie," passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026. Born in Syracuse, New York, Dickie was a graduate of Jamesville-Dewitt High School Class of 1962. He was the son of the late Jacob and Mary Fillinger.
Richard was a proud veteran, having served his country honorably while being stationed in Korea. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career as he worked as a steamfitter for Steamfitters & Plumbers Union Local #267 in Syracuse before retiring in 2001. Prior to his work with the union, he was a driver for Onondaga County. Following his retirement, Dickie continued to contribute to his community, working as a wingman in a plow truck for the Town of Pompey, plus driving tractor trailers for Edinger Trucking in Otisco.
A man of diverse interests, Richard was an avid sportsman and a passionate racecar enthusiast. For over a decade, he raced stock cars at local dirt tracks under the number 15. He also found joy and fulfillment in restoring antique cars and tractors, a testament to his love for mechanics and vintage craftsmanship. Richard was a member of the Pompey Rod & Gun Club and the Scrub Apple Club in DeRuyter.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart of 59 years, the former Sue (Tily); two children, Todd (Suzi) Fillinger of Fabius and Brian (Jessica Stone) Fillinger of Fairfield, TX; a sister, Kathy (Kim Casey) Fillinger of East Syracuse; a brother, Ron (Margaret) Fillinger of Daytona, FL; five grandchildren: Kyle, Tyler, Travis, Alexis, and Brendon; and five great grandchildren.
